Affinity Photo for Mac

Affinity Photo for Mac Public Beta Launch: Photoshop alternative now available

You’ll struggle to find a photographer’s workstation that doesn’t have Adobe Photoshop installed on it these days, but that’s about to change if Serif have anything to say about it.

European software developer Serif, who released Illustrator competitor Affinity Designer in 2014, have just launched the public beta of their latest app in the Affinity suite, Photo.
Serif aren’t simply claiming Photo can match Photoshop, they say it’s built to be much, much better.
Right out of the box, Serif claim Photo is much faster than Photoshop. Managing director Ashley Hewson states:

Photoshop is an amazing piece of software, but the problem is, it’s built on 25-year-old architecture. When that architecture was being created, Adobe couldn’t have anticipated the incredible developments we’ve seen in computers since. Which means that they’re now struggling to adapt Photoshop to take advantage of modern computing power.

Photo, however, is brand new, and therefore built on a brand new, modern, codebase. This means Photo can, apparently, take advantage of modern hardware capabilities in a way that Photoshop can’t. Another touted strength of Photo is it’s ability to retrace every single step you take, nothing is destructive in Photo.
Serif claim the software is packed with pro photography features and, unlike other Photoshop rivals, it boasts end-to-end CMYK, 16 bits per channel editing, LAB colour, RAW processing, ICC colour management, and Photoshop PSD and 64-bit plug-in compatibility.
Photo is Mac only, if you’ve got OS X Lion 10.7.5 or above, you’re good to go. The new Serif software is available in English, German, Spanish and French currently.
We’ll be trialling the beta version of Photo to see how it handles the tasks we’d normally use Photoshop for, stay tuned for updates.
