The first cellular iPad mini combined Apple’s new 7.9-inch format with mobile data in 2012, offering LTE where the model and network supported it. Its A5 chip shared the iPad 2’s foundations, but Lightning and improved cameras made the mini more than a reduced-size copy. The lighter body suited reading and carrying between places, with the same app layout as a full-size iPad. Its non-Retina screen was the clear compromise, leaving fine text less crisp than on the Retina iPad. The Wi-Fi-only first-generation iPad mini provided the compact reading format around wireless networks.
