The original Wi-Fi iPad mini introduced Apple’s smaller tablet format in 2012, shrinking the iPad experience into a 7.9-inch body. Its A5 chip shared the iPad 2’s foundations, but Lightning and improved cameras made the mini more than a reduced-size copy. The lighter body suited reading and carrying between places, with the same app layout as a full-size iPad. Its non-Retina screen was the clear compromise, leaving fine text less crisp than on the Retina iPad. The cellular first-generation iPad mini added mobile connectivity to that first compact design.
