macOS Golden Gate: What’s New, Which Macs Lose Support and Why Intel Still Matters

macOS 27 Golden Gate draws a very clear line under the Intel era. Apple’s next operating system is Apple silicon only, which means even the final Intel Macs will remain on macOS Tahoe 26.

For most people, buying Apple silicon is still the sensible answer. It is faster, more efficient and has a much longer software future. But there is an important exception: creative professionals whose working setup depends on a particular perpetual licence, 32-bit installer, discontinued plug-in, specialist peripheral or Intel version of Windows.

For those users, an older Intel Mac is not simply a cheap substitute for a newer one. It can be the correct tool. The key is choosing the right Intel generation for the software you actually need to preserve.

As of 10 August 2026, macOS 27 Golden Gate remains in preview.

Siri Becomes a Proper Workspace.

In the booming world of AI, an upgraded Siri is on its way. Apple says it will support more natural typed and spoken conversations, understand personal context and sift through photos, emails and notes. It will also be able to control apps such as Messages, Music and Reminders.

All your conversations will be stored in a new Siri app, much like ChatGPT and Claude do now.

This all sounds great, right? Maybe. The huge caveat is that Siri will have intimate visibility of everything listed above, going through your messages and photos at scale once enabled. How much you trust Apple with your data is entirely up to you.

Smaller Improvements Across macOS

Safari gets some quality-of-life features such as tab groups, webpage update monitoring for things like price changes and upgraded password security showing weak or compromised logins, which was previously only in the Keychain app.

Photos gain “Spatial Reframing”. Another AI tool which allows you to adjust the angle of the photo you’ve taken. We’re unsure how useful it truly is, but it’s cool.

Golden Gate also tidies up the somewhat controversial Liquid Glass with adjustments to contrast, revised window shapes, and transparency.

Apple lists faster AirDrop, network browsing and Safari start-page loading, alongside ultrawide display support up to 5K at 120Hz and remembered display layouts.

You may be thinking this is a little light on improvements. We would agree with you. The next big release seems laser-focused on Apple’s next big step into AI and their own competing app. No doubt they’ve seen the success of OpenAI and Anthropic or even OpenClaw and are looking for their slice.

Why Intel Still Matters

Do you still have a particular version of software, plug-in, driver, or external hardware you can’t lose? Some Intel software works on Apple silicon through Rosetta 2 but not everything. Other software simply fails because it contains 32-bit components or depends on drivers and hardware that Rosetta cannot translate.

Mojave and the 2017 Macs

Mojave 10.14 is the final macOS that can run 32-bit applications. Catalina 10.15 and everything after it cannot. That makes a Mojave-capable 2017 Mac valuable to preserve your workflow.

Design and photography

It’s not uncommon for people in the Apple industry to avoid subscriptions like the plague; many users are still using their perpetual Adobe Creative Suite 6 license on older hardware and are looking for that final upgrade to get the most out of their apps. These heavy Photoshop and Lightroom users are stuck with Mojave.

Video

Refusing to let go of your Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Studio 3, Premiere Pro CS6 or Avid Media Composer 2018.12 and 2019.12? You’re also stopped here with Catalina’s 32-bit cut-off. Intel hardware has value for preserving those applications.

Audio

This is where it gets a little more complex, so we will stick to the major revisions. Pro Tools 2019.10 is supported on Mojave 10.14. However, you will need to look in detail at older AAX plug-ins, interface drivers, and iLok combinations, which may narrow your search; if you’re stuck, contact our team.

Ableton Live 9 is even more restrictive, as Ableton lists High Sierra 10.13 as its last officially supported macOS. A 2017 Intel Mac can still get you the right hardware for this major release.

If any of this is you, our biggest recommendation is an iMac Pro. Enterprise Xeon hardware with ECC memory built to last and up to four times faster than the 2012 Mac Pro they are generally upgrading from. You can get a laptop, but ultimately internal temperatures and battery life years down the line could affect you.

The 2019/2020 Final Frontier

Design, photography and CAD

AutoCAD for Mac 2019 (2019.1 & 2019.2) requires a 64-bit Intel processor and explicitly excludes M-series Macs.

Capture One 12.1.5 also specifies an Intel processor; therefore, you will be capped with 2020 devices.

Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2020/2021 are Intel-era releases, but you need to be running a newer version of macOS than Catalina.

Video and audio.

Media Composer 2020.4 introduced Catalina support, while later 2020.12 maintenance releases reached Big Sur. You may need to spend some time to get the exact Media Composer release with its macOS and I/O driver.

Pro Tools 2019.12 added initial Catalina support if you’re running a 2020.x version up until 2021.6 for some 3rd-party software or hardware dependency, you don’t have Rosetta support and will need an Intel Mac. Avid did not add M1 Rosetta support until Pro Tools 2021.6.

Waves V12 is officially Intel-only. Waves says V12 and earlier have no native Apple-silicon support.

Reason 11/Suite 11 may allow you to jump onto Apple Silicon. Versions 11.3.4–11.3.9 run through Rosetta, but this could depend heavily on your workflow as a whole.

Kontakt 5 and Guitar Rig 5 are discontinued Intel versions. Native Instruments says it can open on Apple silicon in Rosetta mode but will not receive updates.

Your most powerful options are the 2020 5k iMac or an Intel-based 2019 Mac Pro 7,1. The iMac will always be generally more affordable, but the Mac Pro will trump performance in Intel-based devices. You can pick a laptop, but our recommendation for ultra-long longevity is a desktop.

  • Check your applications.
  • Find the latest release.
  • Gather their compatibility.
  • Check your plugins, supporting software and hardware.
  • Find the latest version of macOS support and aim for it!

1. Should I buy a refurbished Intel Mac or an Apple-silicon Mac in 2026?

For most people, we recommend spending more on an M1 or newer Mac. Apple silicon offers better performance, battery life and long-term macOS support.

An Intel Mac can still be an ultra-affordable option, or when you need specific software, plug-ins, drivers, peripherals or an Intel Windows workflow. Apple will likely support Intel Macs supported by Tahoe with security updates for three years to four years.

2. Will Intel-only Mac apps work on Apple silicon with macOS 27 Golden Gate?

Many will. Golden Gate retains Rosetta 2, allowing compatible Intel applications to run on Apple silicon.

Rosetta cannot make 32-bit software work, however. An application may also fail because of an incompatible plug-in, driver, licence manager or connected device. Check the exact application version and test the complete workflow before upgrading. Apple explains the limitations here.

3. Which Macs support macOS 27 Golden Gate?

Golden Gate supports Apple-silicon Macs only:

  • MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from 2020

4. Should I keep an Intel Mac for legacy plug-ins, drivers or professional software?

Yes, if your working setup still depends on it. We back preserving a reliable system rather than replacing software, licences and hardware unnecessarily.

Keep copies of installers, licence details, plug-ins and project files, alongside data and bootable backups. Where possible, move the setup to the newest, highest-performing Intel Mac that officially supports the complete application, macOS, plug-in, driver and hardware chain.

5. What is the latest macOS version for an Intel Mac?

macOS Tahoe 26 is the final macOS release supporting any Intel Macs, but only four Intel models qualify.

As a general guide:

  • A 2019 or 2020 Intel Mac may stop at Sonoma or Sequoia, while four models reach Tahoe.
  • A 2018 Mac may stop at Sonoma or Sequoia.
  • The 2017 MacBook Air stops at Monterey.
  • Most 2017 MacBook Pro and iMac models reach Ventura.
  • The 2017 iMac Pro reaches Sequoia.
  • Many 2016 Macs stop at Monterey.
  • A 2015 Mac will generally stop at Big Sur or Monterey.

6. Which Intel Macs lose support in macOS 27 Golden Gate?

Golden Gate supports no Intel Macs. The four models newly dropped after supporting Tahoe are:

  • MacBook Pro, 16-inch, 2019
  • MacBook Pro, 13-inch, 2020, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • iMac, Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020
  • Mac Pro, 2019

Older Intel Macs had already stopped receiving new major macOS releases before Golden Gate. Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list confirms the final four.

7. Will Intel Macs still receive security updates after macOS 27 launches?

Golden Gate itself will not run on Intel. However, Apple generally will update the Intel Macs supported by Tahoe with security updates for three years, maybe four years.

That promise does not cover every older Intel Mac. Browser, application and plug-in developers may also end support on different schedules. Security updates will not provide new features but will keep you safe.

8. Which Intel Mac is best for macOS Mojave and 32-bit apps?

Mojave 10.14 is the final macOS release that runs 32-bit applications. Good options include:

  • iMac Pro
  • 27-inch 5K iMac from 2017
  • 15-inch MacBook Pro from 2019
  • 13-inch MacBook Air from 2019

MacFinder recommends the iMac Pro for demanding work, shortly followed by the 27-inch 5K iMac. For portability, choose the 15-inch MacBook Pro for performance or the MacBook Air for lighter workloads.

Always check the exact software, installer and activation requirements first.

9. Is macOS 27 Golden Gate the last macOS version with full Rosetta support?

Yes. Golden Gate includes general-purpose Rosetta 2 support for compatible Intel applications.

From macOS 28, Apple plans to retain only limited Rosetta functionality for certain older games. If your work depends on Intel software, test every application, plug-in and peripheral before installing Golden Gate. Do not move beyond it until native or Universal replacements are available.

You can disable automatic major macOS upgrades while continuing to receive security updates.

10. How can I check which Mac applications still need Rosetta?

Select the application in Finder, choose File > Get Info, and look at Kind:

  • Application (Intel): requires Rosetta
  • Application (Universal): contains Intel and Apple-silicon code
  • Application (Apple silicon): runs natively

Check the developer’s compatibility information as well. macOS may warn you about affected Intel applications, but plug-ins, drivers, extensions and updaters can be missed.
