How Our Part-Exchange Process Works (And Why It Works)

Part-exchanging your old Apple device can be one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to upgrade, but we know the process can sometimes feel confusing.

You likely have questions like:

  • Can I use the credit immediately?
  • Why can valuations change?
  • Should I buy first or send my Mac first?
  • What happens if I disagree with the inspection?

Which are all completely understandable!

At MacFinder, we want our part-exchange process to be straightforward, transparent and fair. Here we explain exactly how it works, what we inspect and the different ways you can upgrade with us.

When Does My Credit Become Available?

This is probably the most common question we receive.

Your part-exchange value cannot be used until we have physically received and inspected your device.

An online quote is an estimate based on the information submitted and current market conditions. While a quote sits in your basket, it remains dynamic and can change each time you open it.

Once you submit your trade-in to us, your quote becomes fixed for 30 days, subject to inspection and verification.

Sending Your Device Before Purchase

This is the route many customers choose if they would prefer not to pay the full amount upfront.

  1. Submit your trade-in
  2. Send your Apple device to us
  3. We inspect and confirm the valuation
  4. Your store credit is added
  5. You place your order using the credit.

You do not need to pay the full purchase price before upgrading. You may experience some downtime while your current machine is being inspected and your new one is arranged.

Buy First for part exchange

Buy First, Trade-In Afterwards

If avoiding downtime is important, this is usually the most popular option.

Many customers choose to purchase their replacement device first and send their trade-in afterwards.

  1. Place your order
  2. Receive your new device
  3. Send your current Apple device to us
  4. We inspect and confirm the valuation
  5. Your trade-in amount is refunded to your payment method

You can move across to your new machine with minimal interruption. We can also hold your order while the trade-in is completed if you would like us to do your data transfer. Just let our team know. Generally, we ship straight away unless otherwise requested.

Part-Exchange PayPal Finance options

Using Finance With Part-Exchange

Many customers combine part-exchange with our finance options.

Some choose:

  • Pay in 3
  • 0% over 4 months
  • 0% over 6, 12, 18 or 24 months

This allows you to secure your replacement device immediately and then send your trade-in afterwards.

Once your trade-in has been received and approved, the refund is applied back against your payment method.

For finance customers, this means the refund is typically applied to your outstanding balance, which can reduce your monthly payments considerably.

Some customers even choose to pay the finance off entirely once the refund has been applied.

Our 10% Part-Exchange Bonus Explained

There is often confusion between a cash trade-in and a part-exchange.

Here’s the difference.

Cash Trade-In

If you are simply selling your device to us for cash, no bonus will be applied.

Part-Exchange / Order Refund

If you:

  • take store credit, or
  • trade-in against a previous or current MacFinder order

You qualify for an extra 10% bonus.

This bonus is shown on your estimate. However, because final values are confirmed during inspection, the true 10% calculation is completed once the trade-in is approved.

If a valuation changes after inspection, your 10% bonus is still to the new confirmed value and recalculated.

Refund payment method icons

Where Does My Refund Go?

Refunds are returned to the same payment method used for your order.

Finance

Refunded against your outstanding balance

Debit or credit card

Returned to the same card

PayPal

Returned to your PayPal balance

Apple Pay or Google Pay

Returned to the original card used

Bank transfer

Deposited back into your bank account

Please note that to process a refund against an order, the payment date must be within 60 days. After this point, the valuation can only be issued as store credit.

Why Can Valuations Change?

Your online quote is based on the information submitted and assumes the device matches the condition and specification entered.

We can only inspect what we physically receive. Once your device arrives, our technicians verify:

  • Specification
  • Cosmetic condition
  • Functionality
  • Battery condition
  • Hardware authenticity
  • Accessories
  • Security Locks

Because of this, the final valuation may differ from the original estimate.

This can work both ways. It is not uncommon for values to increase.

Some customers unknowingly submit a base specification when they actually have upgraded RAM, storage or processor configurations, which is always great for us to discover because we get to pay more for something better.

Likewise, values can sometimes decrease if:

  • Cosmetic wear is heavier than described
  • Faults are discovered
  • Accessories are missing
  • The specification differs from the submission

Our aim is always to offer a fair and competitive valuation.

Inspection process MacBook device

What Do We Actually Inspect?

Many people are surprised by how detailed our inspection process is. We do not simply power a device on and make a cosmetic judgment.

Our technicians carry out extensive testing and verification.

This includes:

Hardware & Authenticity Checks

We run Apple Diagnostics to confirm:

  • Components are genuine Apple OEM parts
  • Hardware remains correctly serialised to the device

We also:

  • Verify the specification submitted
  • Check liquid contact indicators
  • Inspect internally for corrosion or signs of liquid exposure

Devices are booted into a fresh version of macOS.

Using a clean installation helps us ensure that software issues are removed from the equation and that any identified concerns are genuinely hardware-related.

Battery Testing

For laptops, we run:

  • Battery cycle testing
  • Bischarge testing from 100% to 0%
  • Health verification

This ensures battery health matches what has been submitted.

Functional Testing

We thoroughly test:

  • Every key
  • Trackpad
  • Speakers
  • Touch ID
  • Cameras
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • Display output
  • Data transfer through ports, where applicable

We also carry out:

  • CPU stress testing
  • GPU stress testing
  • Thermal inspection using laser thermometers

This confirms the machine performs correctly and is not overheating.

Cosmetic Assessment

Our technicians photograph and catalogue cosmetic imperfections where present.

Each mark is:

  • photographed
  • recorded
  • noted by location and severity

Cosmetic condition is assessed by trained technicians using consistent grading standards, though minor differences in personal opinion can exist.

What Counts As Normal Wear And Tear?

This is another area where expectations can differ. Putting it simply normal wear and tear includes light marks and gentle signs of use. We appreciate this is still subjective, if you’re ever unsure you are welcome to provide photos before your send the item in.

More significant wear would normally include larger scratches, dent rubbing damage, pressure marks and or moderate cosmetic damage

One of the most commonly missed issues is lamination wear on Apple’s anti-glare coating.

How do I find lamination wear? Clean the screen with a microfibre cloth, turn the display off, turn the light on in your room and shut the curtains. As you move the screen around if you can only see streaks, your screen isn’t clean enough. If you cannot you may seen outlines of your keyboard and small divots as the main light in your room refracts.

Lamination wear can be difficult to spot at home, they are a common reason for revised valuations.

What Needs To Be Included?

Your trade-in should include everything originally supplied with the device.

MacBooksiMacs
Older models included the charger and charging cable.

Newer models only require the charging cable as that is all they were shipped with originally.

All 24-inch iMacs are supplied with colour matches keyboard and mice which if excluded will affect your valuation.

For the above and any other devices, the absence of original accessories may reduce the valuation.

If you have purchased additional genuine Apple accessories, we may also be able to offer payment for these!

Faulty, Liquid-Damaged, or Locked Devices

Faulty MacsLiquid DamageDEP, MDM & Activation Lock
We assess these on a case-by-case basis.

Where possible, we:

Quote for repair work

Deduct this from the valuation

If a device is uneconomical to repair, we will let you know.

Unfortunately, we do not purchase liquid-damaged devices.

They carry significant reliability risk and can fail unpredictably.

We cannot purchase devices that are:

  • Activation Locked
  • DEP enrolled
  • MDM managed

If a device arrives enrolled on DEP or MDM, we may attempt to identify and contact the registered organisation.

Trade-ins cannot be completed until these restrictions are removed.

If a device arrives enrolled on DEP or MDM, we may attempt to identify and contact the registered organisation.

Part exchange shipping and packaging

Packaging, Shipping, and Transit Protection

We cover mainland UK shipping both ways for your trade-in and purchase.

When submitting your trade-in we offer for you to; use the original box, request a protective outer box or request complete packaging if you have no box at all.

For security, we recommend covering parcels externally using mailing bags, plain wrapping or similar protective covering. Even a bin bag and tape can work perfectly well to conceal contents!

We do cover lost parcels and transit damage provided packaging guidance was followed and evidence supports transit damage or loss.

Please remember to follow shipping instruction, retain courier receipts and photograph parcels before shipment. We include a full personailsed list of requirements in every email we send prior to the item being received. These steps help protect both you and your device.

Do I Need To Wipe My Device?

In short, no. If you don’t want to.

You do not need to erase your device before sending it. We securely handle this process when your trade-in arrives.

If you request a data transfer, your device is securely stored in a data-secure caged area within a security cabinet while waiting for the receiving machine.

Your personal data remains yours, and devices are handled securely throughout inspection and transfer processes.

What If I Disagree With The Valuation?

There is absolutely no obligation when sending your device to us. If a valuation changes we explain the reason and you can accept or decline.

If you choose not to proceed, we will return your device free of charge.

If a device has significant cosmetic or functional issues that prevent us from offering a fair market valuation, we may recommend a free return so you can consider alternative selling options.

What If I Don’t Respond?

We understand life gets busy. If we do not receive a response to a revised valuation, we hold the trade-in for 14 days. After this point, we automatically return it to the collection address provided.

How Long Does It Take?

Most trade-ins are:

  • Inspected
  • Approved
  • Paid or credited

within 2 to 5 working days.

What Can Be Part-Exchanged?

We do not part-exchange non-Apple products.
