The cellular iPad 2 combined 3G data with Apple’s thinner, lighter second-generation tablet in 2011, with separate GSM and CDMA hardware variants. A5 introduced a dual-core processor for more capable apps and games, while front and rear cameras added FaceTime and video recording. The Smart Cover introduced a simple magnetic cover that could also fold into a stand. Its screen kept the original resolution, so the improvement in portability and versatility did not extend to sharper text. The Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 kept the thinner design and cameras around wireless networks.
