The third-generation cellular iPad introduced LTE to the range in early 2012, though its supported bands limited where that connection could be used. A5X added graphics capacity to drive the much higher-resolution screen, while the improved rear camera enabled clearer photographs and 1080p video. The larger battery helped preserve the familiar battery-life target, but the body became thicker and heavier than iPad 2. It still used the 30-pin connector, before Lightning arrived later that year. The Wi-Fi-only third-generation iPad offered the Retina screen for use around wireless networks.
