The third-generation Wi-Fi iPad introduced the Retina display to the full-size iPad in early 2012, making text, photographs and app graphics far sharper. A5X added graphics capacity to drive the much higher-resolution screen, while the improved rear camera enabled clearer photographs and 1080p video. The larger battery helped preserve the familiar battery-life target, but the body became thicker and heavier than iPad 2. It still used the 30-pin connector, before Lightning arrived later that year. The cellular third-generation iPad added mobile data, with LTE availability dependent on model and network.
